DIY Chalkboard Frame

I have always loved the idea Chalkboard Frames, but each time that I've tried to make one they have failed horribly. Have no fear!  I have finally discovered a way to complete and accomplish this incredible task!  Instead of trying to save money, by making the paint yourself- I realized that it's better just to buy the stinking paint.  It's really worth it!!
This is such a great gift for your friends and family (or just keep for yourself), because it looks fantastic and can be used in so many ways!  It's especially fun to personalize each one.

So, I give you my first DIY tutorial:

What you'll need:
- Well, a frame of course! (These you can find at a great prices at Hobby Lobby and Michael's.)
-  Chalkboard Paint.  (Found at hardware stores, such as Home Depot and Lowes.)
-  A couple paint brushes that you don't mind throwing away afterwards.
-  Painter's tape (this is optional, but if the frame that you buy is like mine, where the glass is not removable, then you will want to use some tape.)
- Chalk (I used regular, dusty sticks of chalk for step 5, but used a Chalkboard marker to write on the finished frame with)

First step:  Lay down some newspaper or a disposable table cloth on the surface you will be using.  Painting is messy, so I would also recommend wearing an apron.

Secondly, like I mentioned before, if your glass in not removable, you may want to tape the edges and corners of the glass against the frame, so that no paint gets on the actual frame.

Use your disposable paintbrush to paint on 2-3 coats of Chalkboard paint onto the glass of the frame.
Make sure to let the paint dry in-between coats.

After the paint is completely dry, carefully peel off the tape.  When you remove the tape, it may take some of the paint with it; so, I went back afterwards with a thinner paintbrush and fixed the edges.

I hear this step is important: After the frame is COMPLETELY dry, take one of your pieces of dusty chalk and rub it over the surface of the chalkboard.  This step will seal the paint and any tiny cracks there may be in the paint.  After you leave the chalk there for a day, take a napkin or piece of paper towel and wipe off all the chalk.  You may want to dampen the cloth to help all the chalk come off.

Lastly, write your favorite quote, Bible verse, draw a picture onto the frame and your masterpiece is complete:)

Have questions about any of the steps (or anything else), please comment below!!

  1. Is this as messy as splatter paint? I ask this because a few friends and myself were splatter painting a piece for a friend and in result had pieces of paint all over! :)

  2. Splatter painting is also fun, yes it is messy, but it does take a little less time, of course depending on what it is. Thanks for finally checking out my blog Miss Anonymous;) love you Mikayla and Sadie!!!
